Travel Documents
A valid passport and depending on your nationality an additional visa for entering Haiti (please make the necessary inquiries ahead of travel).
Banking and Currency
The local currency is the Gourde (GD). US Dollars are the main foreign currency traded. They can be exchanged in Banks and designated locations. Credit cards are accepted only in major shops and Hotels in Port-au-Prince and Pétion-Ville.
Health
No specific vaccinations are required to enter Haiti. However it is better to see your physician prior to travel and confirm primary courses and boosters are up to date. There is St. Croix hospital in Léogâne, private clinics are located in and around Port-au-Prince. In the event of a medical emergency it is advisable to get treatment abroad.
Tropical Storms
Between June and November tropical storms and hurricanes are possible. Daily weather information in Haiti is available from national and international media. The Haitian meteorological service provides hurricane warnings via national radio.
Climate and temperature
Haiti has a tropical climate with temperatures ranging from 75 to 95 Fahrenheit (25 to 35°C). Water temperatures are between 75 and 85 Fahrenheit (25 and 30°C)
Language
Creole and French are the two official languages in Haiti. A good part of the population speaks French.
Power
Haiti operates on 110V 60 Hz with North American style flush-mounted sockets. Many appliances with their own power adapters, such as laptop computers and digital cameras, can be plugged into either 110-120-volt or 220-240-volt sockets/points and will adapt to the voltage automatically.
Driving and Rental Cars
Haiti follows right-hand traffic rules. You will find international and national rental car services at the airport as well as Port-au-Prince and Pétion-Ville.
